Vote Early and Vote Often to Turn on the Lights at Burnett Bayland Park Soccer Field:  Bright Fields! Bright Futures!

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD), in partnership with the Houston Parks Board (HPB), has entered the Pepsi Refresh Everything Campaign in hopes of winning a $250,000 grant to kick up soccer play at Burnett Bayland Park. HPARD's entry is called "Bright Fields! Bright Futures!" and its goal is to light a 330' x 210' soccer field at Burnett Bayland Park, 6000 Chimney Rock Road, Houston, Texas 77081.

The winner of the $250,000 grant is determined by the total number of votes their project receives from August 1 to August 31, 2010. Please visit www.refresheverything.com and vote every day during August for "Bright Fields! Bright Futures!" and support Houston Youth Soccer.

The Burnett Bayland's Soccer Program registers 500 young people yearly in HPARD's Youth Soccer Program. Enrollment in the program is growing constantly, leading to intense competition for playing time on the available fields. Lighting the field will increase the number of participants in soccer leagues by increasing the hours of use in the park. It is estimated that, with the new lights, Burnett Bayland's Soccer Program could serve at least 900 young soccer enthusiasts every year.

Please vote early and vote often to turn on the lights and pass it along! www.refresheverything.com

For more information, contact Estella Espinosa, HPARD Communications Manager, at estella.espinosa@houstontx.gov or 832.395.7022.

We're making plans for another COP certification class!!

Certifications are now valid for two years, so if you can make it to this one, you'll have two years of coverage as a certified patroller.  What does that mean?  YOU'RE HELPING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BE SAFE!!!

Remember, you can't wait to the last minute because there are applications and background checks that must be completed by the HPD prior to the class.

Please contact Ann Starr at braeburnterrace@aol.com as soon as possible if you or someone you know is interested.

We need to grow our numbers.  If each person currently patrolling can find one other, we can then double our numbers!

Be aware of your surroundings...report suspicious activities to the HPD.  If you see something that doesn't look right, let them know.  Make sure to make notes, so you don't forget the details.  Braeburn Terrace has been experiencing some crime activity this New Year and we need to be AWARE!

Car theft - Jackwood
Burgulary - Dunlap
Drug raid - Grape

Together...in numbers, we can make a difference for each other!  Join our Citizen's on Patrol efforts...certification class currently being scheduled, but we must have enough participation for the HPD to teach the class.

Remember Civic Club meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  Come out and support your neighborhood, together we can accomplish anything!

Due to the diligence of several community and neighborhood individuals Mayor White has denoted Braeburn as an Officially Recognized Super Neighborhood Council...Congratulations!!!

Your super neighborhood at-a-glance:

Braeburn is a part of southwest Houston along Brays Bayou west of Hillcroft. The first of these middle class subdivisions was developed after World War II at a time when Bissonnet provided the route into the city, rather than the Southwest Freeway. Development continued into the 1970s. The Braeburn Country Club is found in the center of the community. Many large tracts of land were developed as apartment complexes. Subdivisions found here include Robindell, Braeburn Glen, Braes Terrace, Larkwood, Braeburn Valley, and the acreage lot subdivision, Brae Acres.

    * Houston City Council Districts C & F
    * Houston Independent School District (1 public school)
    * 2,554 acres (4.0 sq. miles)

A super neighborhood is a geographically designated area where residents, civic organizations, institutions and businesses work together to identify, plan, and set priorities to address the needs and concerns of their community. The boundaries of each super neighborhood rely on major physical features (bayous, freeways, etc.) to group together contiguous communities that share common physical characteristics, identity or infrastructure.

The super neighborhood elects a council comprised of area residents and stakeholders that serves as a forum to discuss issues and identify and implement priority projects for the area.

The Planning Department focuses on assisting super neighborhood councils develop greater organizational self-sufficiency which is achieved by helping each one:

    *  Build capacity,
    * Build relationships,
    * Build resources,
    * and Build links to volunteers.

To learn if there is a super neighborhood council in your area or to find out how form a council call (713)837-7803.

The Super Neighborhood initiative generally encompasses the following elements:

    *      Stakeholder Participation and Outreach
    *      Organizational Framework/Council Formation
    *      By-laws
    *      Super Neighborhood Action Plan (SNAP)
